What is Kindle Vella?
Kindle Vella is a relatively new feature by Amazon, which lets you buy e-books by the chapter, instead of all at once. The first 3 chapters are always free, and then you use "tokens" to unlock each additional chapter.
Here's how it works:
The price of each chapter depends on how long it is -- so, a short (600 or more) chapter may cost 5 tokens. A longer chapter may cost 8 or more tokens. Either way, a bundle of tokens lasts you quite a long time.
What if I don't own a Kindle?
You can download the free Kindle app for any device, from phones to laptops. Or you can just read the chapters straight from the website on your computer screen.
Can I read Kindle Vella chapters on any other platform, like nook?
No, you can only read Kindle Vella stories on the Amazon website, or on the Kindle app.
Are all ebooks on Amazon?
No, other companies sell e-books as well:
Aren't paper books better for kids?
While nothing beats the smell of a new book, there are times when e-books are a good solution. They're easy to carry -- on an e-reader or on a phone (so, if find yourself waiting at the dentist's office, your child always has a book to read). You can brighten the screen to read on road trips at night. Most times, they're cheaper than print books, and you have instant "delivery" of hard-to-find books.
This is an interesting article by Scholastic that discusses some of the advantages of e-readers.
